What the France application actually asks for

  • France's own guidance points at the ISO/IEC photograph standard rather than publishing a separate French rule, so the framing is the common Schengen one: 35x45mm, head 32-36mm chin to crown, neutral expression, no glasses glare.
  • France describes a plain light-coloured background rather than prescribing the neutral-grey contrast examples in Germany's sheet. This preset uses light grey as its recorded default, but that tool choice is not evidence that the same shade is required by every Schengen mission.
  • A long-stay VLS-TS application uses the same photograph specification as the short-stay Schengen visa, so the two do not need different images.
  • The 32 to 36 mm head band occupies about 71 to 80 percent of a 45 mm frame. Measure chin to crown, not chin to the top edge of styled hair, and keep clear space above the crown inside the finished 35 x 45 mm crop.
  • The source specifies print geometry but no universal digital KB ceiling for France visa portals. The 413 x 531 display is a 300 DPI reference generated from millimetres; if an application screen asks for pixels or bytes, its current figures govern the upload.
  • A plain background still needs even illumination. Replacing a busy scene with the recorded light-grey tone does not correct shadows across the face, glare on lenses or a crop outside the published head-height band; inspect those properties separately.

Before you upload — France photo preparation checklist

  • A plain, evenly lit background to start (we apply the selected colour)
  • Face the camera straight on, both ears roughly visible
  • Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open
  • A recent photo, taken within the last 6 months
  • Shadows on your face or the wall behind you
  • Glasses — remove them unless they're medically required
  • Hair across the eyes, hats or caps
  • Filters, beauty smoothing, or a cropped group photo
