What the Germany application actually asks for

• Germany's published sample sheet states the rule as CONTRAST rather than as a banned colour: the background must be one colour and bright, ideally a neutral grey, and in a contrasting colour to your face and hair. It does not prohibit white. The practical consequence is that the right shade depends on you — the sheet suggests a medium-grey background for light-coloured hair and a light-grey one for dark hair.
• The frame and head band follow the EU Visa Code that every Schengen state shares: 35x45mm with the head 32-36mm chin to crown, which the sheet gives as 70-80% of the photo. What it is strict about is that the background be a single flat tone: shadows on the background are listed as not acceptable, alongside a busy background and insufficient contrast.
• The same sheet covers the national (D) visa and residence permit routes as well as the Schengen visa, so one correctly prepared photograph serves all three. Confirm against the mission handling your application before printing.
• Because the rule is about contrast rather than a fixed colour, the tool cannot decide the right shade for you — it depends on your hair. Pick a background that visibly separates from your hair in the preview rather than accepting whichever default is applied.
• The 413 x 531 pixel value shown by the tool is only the 35 x 45 mm print shape converted at a 300 DPI reference. Germany's sample sheet does not publish a visa-upload pixel canvas or KB limit, so do not treat that calculated pair as a mission portal requirement.
