What the Netherlands application actually asks for
- The Netherlands applies its OWN national photo criteria to a Schengen visa submitted to it, which is unusual: its visa checklist tells applicants to bring a photo meeting Dutch requirements rather than a generic Schengen one. That means a smaller head than our German or French pages show — 26 to 30 mm chin to crown for ages 11 and over.
- Background may be light grey, light blue or white, and prints want a minimum of 400 DPI. If you apply through an external service provider, a digital photo is taken at your appointment and you do not need to bring one.
- The Dutch national criteria that govern here also cover the driving licence and identity card, so the same recorded geometry applies across those named Dutch documents. Do not generalise that cross-document rule to another destination without checking its own sources.
- The 26 to 30 mm head band on a 45 mm frame works out to roughly 58 to 67 percent of the image. That is visibly smaller than the 70 to 80 percent framing recorded on the Germany and France pages here, so a crop prepared to either of those ranges would be too tight for this application.
- The 413 x 531 pixels shown by the tool are a print conversion reference, not a published Dutch visa-upload canvas. At an external service-provider appointment, follow the cited live digital-photo process instead of treating the reference JPEG as a required upload.
Before you upload — Netherlands photo preparation checklist
- A plain, evenly lit background to start (we apply the selected colour)
- Face the camera straight on, both ears roughly visible
- Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open
- A recent photo, taken within the last 6 months
- Shadows on your face or the wall behind you
- Glare or tint on glasses
- Hair across the eyes, hats or caps
- Filters, beauty smoothing, or a cropped group photo
Get the head size right
For Netherlands, your face should fill 58–67% of the photo — the maker does this automatically, but here's what it should look like.

Good to know
Per the official Dutch government portal: 35x45mm, colour, face 26-30mm chin-to-crown (ages 11+), face width 16-20mm, plain light grey / light blue / white background, max 6 months old, min 400 DPI for prints. The Netherlands applies these national criteria to Schengen visa applications submitted to it - its own visa checklist asks for a photo meeting Dutch requirements - so the head here is deliberately smaller than on our German or French visa pages. If you apply through an external service provider, a digital photo is taken at the appointment.
