What the New Zealand application actually asks for
- Immigration New Zealand rejects a photo for being too SMALL as well as too large. The accepted band is 512 KB to 3.14 MB, so the usual instinct — compress it down — produces a file INZ will not take. This is the reverse of nearly every other application on this site.
- The upload is JPEG in portrait 3:4 between 900 x 1200 and 2250 x 3000 pixels, with the face covering 70-80% of the frame and taken within the last six months. INZ also states it does not accept photos altered by AI editing tools.
- For a paper application the print is the familiar 35 x 45 mm; the pixel and file-size rules above apply to the online route only.
- The 3:4 portrait ratio is worth setting deliberately rather than trusting a crop by eye. A photograph a little wider than 3:4 will still meet the pixel minimums and the file-size band while failing the shape check, which is the fault most likely to survive your own inspection.
Before you upload — New Zealand photo preparation checklist

- Face the camera straight on, both ears roughly visible

- Glasses — remove them unless they're medically required
- Hair across the eyes, hats or caps
- Filters, beauty smoothing, or a cropped group photo
