Application-specific notes for GATE
- GATE constrains the PROPORTIONS of both files. The photograph must fall between an aspect ratio of 0.66 and 0.89 with the face covering 60-70% of the frame after cropping, and the signature must be roughly 1:2.75 to 1:3.75 in height to width with the writing filling 70-80% of its image. A file inside the size limit but outside those ratios is still wrong.
- The photograph is 3.5 cm wide by 4.5 cm high on a white background with nothing and nobody else in the frame. The instruction is specific that a signature on a dark background is not accepted, so scan on plain white paper rather than photographing a page in poor light.
- The aspect-ratio rules are checked mechanically at upload, so a photograph that looks correct can still be refused for sitting a few percent outside the band. If the form objects without saying why, the ratio is the first thing to re-measure rather than the file size.
- The published aspect band of 0.66 to 0.89 is wide enough to include 3.5 x 4.5 cm (0.78) comfortably, so the standard passport proportion satisfies it. An ad-hoc crop can still fall outside the band, so re-measure the exported width-to-height ratio before upload.
About this exam
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is conducted by a different IIT or IISc each year; the photo file-size cap is set by that year's conducting institute (600 KB for GATE 2026, run by IIT Guwahati) and can change between editions.

Frequently asked questions
What is the photo size for the GATE (Engineering) application?
The stored GATE (Engineering) target is 5–600 KB, around 350×450 px, in JPEG format. This tool resizes and compresses a prepared photo to that target; confirm the active form before submitting.
What is the signature size for GATE (Engineering)?
The stored signature target is 3–300 KB, around 400×130 px, in JPEG format. Follow the current notice's ink and paper instructions, then upload it here to clean and resize it.
How do I resize my photo to 5–600 KB for GATE (Engineering)?
Upload your photo and the tool compresses it to the stored GATE (Engineering) target and applies the recorded dimensions. Everything runs in your browser.
What should I check before submitting GATE (Engineering) files?
Compare the exported photo with the stored 5–600 KB photo and 3–300 KB signature bands, recorded geometry, recorded formats, then inspect the image for blur and low contrast. Inspect the signature separately for faint strokes and excess paper. Confirm every stored value against the active form; the tool cannot predict acceptance.
Is this GATE (Engineering) resizer free and private?
Yes — free, no watermark, no sign-up, and your photo never leaves your device. All processing happens in your browser.
Where can I confirm the official GATE (Engineering) requirements?
Always verify the current limits on the official source (GATE 2026 — Photograph & Signature specifications) before submitting, as requirements can change between notification cycles.
